For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a pretty active person. My childhood has consisted doing various kinds of sports such as volleyball, golf, swimming, gymnastics, and figure skating. I was quite the ball of energy as a kid. I’d always be running around, playing, etc.

Simply put I was restless.

Our dad was quite the health buff too. Growing up, he’d always tell us to take care of our health, eat our veggies, exercise, and all that. I still remember getting my daily intake of 1tbsp of coconut oil and doing my AM cardio on the treadmill. That was 10 year old me. Fast forward to being 19, I find myself still doing the same.

But truth be told, it wasn’t always like that. During my high school years I became lazy and gluttonous. I’d spend hours in front of the computer and not have any physical activity at all. On top of that, I would eat junk food. I was quite skinny and lanky when I was younger no matter what I ate which eventually led me to thinking that I can eat whatever I want and never have to worry about gaining weight. Boy was I wrong.

By senior year, I became more aware of my body image and noticed all the weight I gained. Once summer came, I made the decision to start changing my terrible eating habits and start exercising again. I even made a fitness tumblr to help motivate myself to get back in shape. I also educated myself about health by researching on what I should and shouldn’t eat, the health benefits of certain food, etc.

Once I gained all this knowledge, I quickly cut out all the nasty food I used to eat and I never looked at these foods the same way again. Being enlightened about these things really helps make everything easier. The more you know, the better. And no, it’s not a crash diet. It’s a lifestyle change.

My road to fitness is a never-ending journey. I will always push myself to do better than before because I know I can.

So without further ado, let’s get down to business.

Clean eating is key to living a healthy lifestyle and losing weight. You can work out as much as you want but if your diet consists of C.R.A.P. (Carbonated drinks, Refined sugar, Artifical, and Processed food) then you won’t be making much of a difference. It’s 80% diet and 20% exercise. Trust me, giving up junk food will be the best decision you’ll make for you and your body.

I have a plant-based diet which means what I eat consists primarily of fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Nothing else. Before you ask, no I don’t miss bacon. At all. Ever since I switched to being plant-based, I always felt lighter and more energetic, never bloated nor groggy. It’s amazing.

When it comes to my meals I’m always the one who makes them. That way, I get to keep track of what goes in my food and not have to worry about anything.

I also make sure to drink as much water as I can throughout the day. If I’m not in the mood for water, I’d whip up some tea. Genmaicha green tea, chai tea, peppermint tea, and G.T.’s Kombucha are my all-time favourites.

Warm up

Every time I do my workouts, I always make sure to warm up my body first before proceeding. It helps loosen up my muscles and joints before engaging in a strenuous workout and prevent any possible injuries.

This cardio warm up routine from Fitness Blender is what I always do prior to exercising.

I’ve tried and tested so many methods of exercising and finally, I found ones that I genuinely enjoy doing which are HIIT and Pilates. I think it’s so important to find a workout that you’d always look forward to doing and genuinely enjoy because it makes working out seem less of a chore.

As for me, I do my workouts at home by watching Fitness Blender videos or Blogilates videos because I just can’t be bothered to go to the gym nor pay to workout when I can do these things at the comfort of my own home.

Currently, I’m doing the Blogilates PIIT28 challenge and it’s amazing. Another great at-home workout option is the Nike Training Club app – also a personal favourite of mine.

Prior to doing PIIT28, I used to do a combination of HIIT (high intensity interval training) and Pilates – working out 5 days a week and resting for 2. Always make sure to have your rest days. Over-training can lead to fatigue and stress which is definitely something you’d want to avoid.

Apart from the usual workout, I also enjoy hiking. It’s another great way to get some physical activity plus, I get to explore and be surrounded by nature.

Cool down

At the end of my workout routine, I also make sure to do a cool down exercise to stretch my muscles and keep them from being too sore the next day. I don’t necessarily follow a specific routine for this one. I just make sure to stretch the muscles of whichever area of my body I worked out for the day whether it’s lower body, upper body or total body.

Keep in mind, your cool down and stretch is just as important as your warm up. Don’t skip it.

When it comes to workout clothes, I always try to look for ones that are high quality and easy to move in. These ones from MillennX are absolutely perfect. Not only are the designs great but the quality is too. Their sports bra has great support and as a bonus, it doubles as a bikini top which gives you more wear out of it. Plus points! I also love the fact that they’re a local brand. Their products are definitely up to par with the international brands.

As for my workout equipment, I keep a yoga mat handy because some of my exercises require me to lay down on the floor. Aside from that I also have two 6lb dumbbells and a 15lb dumbbell if I ever feel like including some extra weight into my workout.

At the end of the day, it’s best to remember not to be too hard on yourself and don’t compare yourself to a Victoria’s Secret Angel (even they struggle with body image too). Love your body. Love it enough to nourish it and keep it healthy. That’s all that matters. You don’t have to be a size 0 to be sexy because life is more than just the numbers you see on the scale. I can’t emphasize enough how important self-love is so be kind and love yourself.

Good luck and don’t sweat it. x
